The Hessians—a name that has long carried a sinister reputation in American history. While they were nowhere near as terrifying as Christopher Walken’s portrayal in Sleepy Hollow, these German mercenaries still struck an imposing figure. Hired by King George III from various German princely states, they were brought to the thirteen colonies to bolster British forces against the American revolutionaries.
