In May 1861, as the American Civil War erupted, the 14th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was formed at Camp Duncan near Clarksville, Tennessee. Under the leadership of Colonel William Forbes, these men—hailing from the western reaches of the Confederacy—would find themselves marching far from home, fighting not in the familiar hills of Tennessee but in the battlefields of Virginia.
